Fencing is one of the most quote-intensive segments in residential construction — clients have lots of options, prices vary widely by material, and the site conditions (slopes, rocks, existing obstacles) can change your labor estimate dramatically. Knowing your true cost per linear foot for each fence type is the foundation of competitive and profitable bidding.

Tips for Bidding Fence Jobs
- Walk the entire property line before quoting. Note grade changes, underground utilities (call 811), existing posts to remove, and access constraints for equipment.
- Verify the property line. Building on the wrong side of the property line means tearing it down. Ask for a plat or have the client locate their pins.
- Quote gates as a line item, not included in per-foot price. Gate hardware and extra posts significantly change the cost — obscuring them in a per-foot number sets up disputes.
- Include a frost depth clause in northern climates. If frost depth is deeper than standard, post lengths and concrete volume change. Price for the actual depth required.
- Charge for old fence removal separately. Removing, rolling, and disposing of chain link or wood fence takes real time. A common mistake is burying disposal costs in the per-foot price.
